Member Spotlight - AudibleDread

← Back to News

It's time for some Scandi sounds for our next Member Spotlight, as AudibleDread, who comes from Finland, is next up. They've got a creepy collection of horror based audio assets on their store, so read on below to find out which other GDM member inspired them to start selling assets.

You can check out their full collection here.

GDM Username: AudibleDread

Name/Nickname:
Sami Hiltunen

Age: 34

Country: Finland

Developer, Asset Creator or are you a bit of both?:

I am a bit of both. I try to get involved with game making as much as possible. There have been the occasional game jam I've been involved in and I actively look for game projects to be a part of.

Full Time, Part Time or Hobby?:

This is at the moment I'd say a hobby, though it has been growing steadily. Hopefully it will become at least part time in the future.

How long have you been doing this?:

I have been doing this for about a year and a half. I started at the beginning of last year. WOW Sounds' blog post about selling audio assets inspired me to give it a shot. I had the idea of selling audio before, but that blog post was very thorough and gave me a lot of information to make me confident in wanting to do it. Big thanks to them!

What made you become a dev/artist?:

I think just the desire to express myself. I started by doing films with my friends at the age of 13 and editing music videos on my own. Later on I started writing poetry as a means to cope with life's challenges. I always had this urge to express myself.

As the years went on I went onto study at the Lapland University of Applied Sciences, to get a degree in Bachelor of Culture and Arts. Initially I was going to major in filming and video editing, but audio production and sound design started to seem more interesting to me. You can do so much with sound, create entire worlds with just audio, I love it!

Favourite software/tools to use?:

My main tool is Cubase 12 for sure. That is where every project will start and sculpt into whatever I put out. Also, my most important recording equipment would probably be the Zoom H6 and Rode's shotgun mic NTG 2. Those two will get you a long way. My favorite plugins currently are the delay effect called Grainspace by Audiority and the Argent Compressor by Nimble Tools.

What’s one tip you would give to someone starting out?:

Just go in with no expectations. Try to look around the market what could be missing, what you could bring in there? But also do what you really want to do, because it will show in the quality of your work when you enjoy the process.

Don't be let down by a possible slow start. It can take time for people to discover your work.

How do you promote your work (games or assets)?:

I am really bad at promoting my stuff. I used to have Twitter or X or whatever it is called today. I'd post there every once in a while about a new release but nothing major.

I have to find a new place to promote my stuff. Any hints as to where that would be are welcome!

What project are you working on now?:

I have been toying with the idea of doing another space horror related pack. I am currently playing through The Callisto Protocol and it's giving me some ideas.

Also would like to find the time to compose music for a survival horror audio pack. It would probably include music, ambients and sound effects.

Any completed projects/work you want to promote?

Yes! I recently put together an experimental noise audio pack called "Buried In The Noise". It is available for free here - https://www.gamedevmarket.net/asset/buried-in-the-noise

And finally, favourite game ever & why?:

Ouch, that's a tough one. I have a handful that are always at the top of my favorites list: Half-Life, Fahrenheit:Indigo Prophecy and GTA San Andreas. But I will say Outlast because it's my weird comfort game. The game has been so inspiring to me through out the years. In school I wrote an analysis about a scene in the game on my final thesis and I got to interview the sound designer Jonathan Wachoru for it. The very first soundtrack I wrote was heavily inspired by Outlast as well. It's a special kind of game to me for sure.
